Dom McKechnie – Specialist Automatic Disability Driving Instructor

Dom McKechnie is a highly experienced automatic driving instructor specialising in adapted driving lessons and mobility driver training across Essex.

Following his own recovery journey after suffering a stroke, Dom is now dedicated to helping people with disabilities and mobility challenges gain confidence, independence, and freedom through driving. His calm, understanding, and supportive approach makes him especially well suited to learners who may feel nervous or require additional support.

Dom is a Motability registered instructor and is also listed on the Disability Driving Instructors Register.

He teaches in a fully adapted automatic Ford Focus Titanium equipped with specialist mobility adaptations designed to support a wide range of physical needs and driving requirements.

Dom’s adapted automatic vehicle includes:

• Brig-Ayd push/pull hand controls with indicator pin switch
• Brig-Ayd twin flip left foot accelerator
• Bever SmartSteer steering aid with integral secondary controls
• Bever SmartControl interface with additional wiring for pin switch
• Steering ball and specialist steering clamps

These adaptations allow many learners with reduced mobility or lower limb disabilities to drive safely, comfortably, and confidently.

• Areas outside his catchment area with additional cost of travel time
