The Theory Test

You can study for the theory and hazard perception test whilst learning to drive, your instructor will be able to help you. The theory and hazard perception tests are separate but will be taken together.

The theory test consists of 50 multiple choice questions. You have 57 minutes to complete the test and must achieve 43 correct answers to pass.

The hazard perception test will start within three minutes of completing the theory test. It will contain 14 video clips, each lasting about one minute and will contain one or more hazards which you will have to respond to by clicking the mouse button as soon as you see the hazard developing. There are 15 hazards in total, the earlier you respond, the higher you score. A total of 75 points are available with a pass mark of 44.

We recommend you use the DVD Driving test success ( all tests ) by Focus which has the official DSA theory test question bank and over 300 Hazard perception video clips

The Driving Test

You cannot apply for your practical driving test until you have passed your theory test. You will need to quote your theory test certificate number when booking your practical test.

On the day of your test you will attend with your instructor and meet your examiner in the waiting room. You must produce both parts of your provisional driving licence (photo card and counterpart) and theory pass certificate.

Before the test begins you will be asked to read a vehicle number plate from a distance of 20.5 metres (67 feet). Next, the examiner will ask you two questions about maintaining the car, one ‘show me’ question and one ‘tell me’ question. The examiner will then briefly explain what the test involves and the test will begin when he asks you to start the engine.

The test will last approximately 40 minutes. The route will involve a variety of town and country driving and you will need to demonstrate two of the four manoeuvres and occasionally an emergency stop.

At the end of the test the examiner will tell you if you have passed or failed.

You will fail if you make more than 15 minor driving faults or any major fault.

When you pass, the examiner will take your provisional licence and give you a pass certificate (you will receive your full licence in the post within three weeks). If you fail the examiner will explain the mistakes you made. You will need to wait ten clear working days before you can take another test.
